Blackberry Lily
The blackberry lily (Belamcanda chinensis), also charmingly known as the leopard lily, is a botanical oddity dressed in whimsy. Though it bears the name "lily," it’s actually a proud member of the iris family, a floral trickster that delights in keeping gardeners guessing.
Native to the storybook landscapes of East Asia, this plant twirls into bloom with clusters of orange petals, each speckled with red freckles like a fairy’s freckles after a mischief-filled day. Plants can grow to 3 feet tall with blooms that continue on for weeks through the summer.
Its real magic, however, is in the transformation that follows. When the flowers fade, curious seed pods appear, eventually popping open to reveal shiny black seeds that look just like tiny blackberries, an enchanting surprise and a wonderful texture for the garden.
Thriving in sunny spots with well-drained soil, blackberry lilies are hardy, carefree guests in zones 5 through 10. They're adored by bees and butterflies alike, though best kept out of reach of nibbling pets and curious children as they can be toxic if consumed.
Add one to your garden and you’ve got more than a flower, you’ve got a little bit of interest all season long.
